The Power Chord is probably the easiest Chord to Learn. Actually, it’s not even a chord. A chord occurs when we Harmonize the 1st, 3rd and 5th degree of a scale. We need three notes, though, in order to create a chord. The Power Chords only use the 1st and 5th degree.
Mainly used in Rock and Blues, the power chord became a great Rhythmical Tool. It sounds perfect with a Distorted Sound (The 1st and 5th degree have a really good harmonics relationship). Without the 3rd degree, the Power Chord suits perfectly on Major and Minor Chord with no need to change any finger or position. This is possible because, as you probably know, the 3rd degree determine the Major or Minor Nature …. The Power Chord is a neutral chord !!!
We can play the power chord starting on each String from 6th to 2nd. Check out the Pics and learn the power chord shape. Remember that:
- The white dot represent the Root (index finger)
- The Power Chord with the Root on the 3rd string has a different shape.
