EACH DAY A NEW FINGERSTYLE TECHNIQUE
DAY 1. THE ALTERNATE FINGERING TECHNIQUE
No more sloppy plucking with just one finger!
In this lesson, you will learn how to alternate between the index and the middle finger. We will use a beautiful yet simple melody in E minor.
The exercise can be broken down into two sections:
Section 1: Using the alternate fingering technique to play the melody.
Section 2: Combining melody and chords.
DAY 2. THE MOST POPULAR FINGERSTYLE PATTERN
Today you will learn the most popular fingerpicking pattern every guitar player should learn. It is called P i m a.
P i m a stands for pollice, indice, meodio, and anulare, in English, thumb, index, middle, and ring.
In this lesson, I will show you how to play a chord progression using the Pima.
We will explore the most popular combinations, such as plucking the strings simultaneously using the Pima. Then, breaking down the pattern into single notes by assigning a finger to each string.
We will also introduce another popular fingerpicking pattern: The Pami (Thumb, ring, middle, and index).
DAY 3. SIMPLE FINGERPICKING MELODY
It is time to learn a simple yet beautiful melody!
In today’s lesson, you will learn a lovely melody in the key of E minor.
We will use the alternate fingering technique to play the notes of the melody. The thumb will take care of the bass note of each chord.
In this lesson, we will also strum a few simple chords such as E minor, C major, and D major.
DAY 4. COMBINE CHORDS AND MELODY
In this lesson, you will learn how to combine chords and melody.
This approach is one of the most popular aspects of the fingerstyle guitar in which the index, middle, and ring finger take care of the melody while the thumb played the bass note (the root note) of each chord.
With this approach, we can simplify a chord by playing its root note only while the index or middle finger can pluck one or two notes from the chord.
Below is an example of how to simplify a C major chord. Instead of playing the full chord, we will only play the root note and third.
DAY 5. BEAUTIFUL SPANISH MELODY
In today’s lesson, we will combine different fingerpicking techniques over a beautiful Spanish chord progression.
The most popular Spanish chord progression is the i VII VI V in a minor key. Since we are playing these chords in the key of A minor, we will play the following chords: Am G F E.
You will learn:
- The chord progression in different positions.
- A beautiful Spanish melody.
- A rhythmic fingerpicking pattern.
DAY 6. IMPROVE THE THUMB TECHNIQUE
Learn how to improve your thumb technique by following these three golden rules.
In this lesson, we will work on a simple yet beautiful chord progression using the Travis Picking technique. With this technique, the thumb takes care of two bass strings while the index, middle, and ring finger play the top three strings.
A great exercise that will improve your thumb technique and your rhythm, finger dexterity, and musicality.
DAY 7. COMBINE ALL THE TECHNIQUES!
Welcome to the last episode of the Fingerpicking Guitar in 7 Days Program. In today’s lesson, we will combine all the techniques we learned during this mini-program and play them over the most famous melody on the guitar.
The song is called Asturias, and it is indeed one of the most popular motives on classical and acoustic guitar.
We are not learning the entire song. We are using the song to put into practice all the techniques we learned throughout the mini-course.
There are five different sections:
Section 1: We will play the melody with the thumb (DAY 6 Three Thumb Rules).
Section 2: Let’s add the alternate fingering technique (DAY 1, Alternate Fingering).
Section 3: Simple plucking pattern (DAY 2 Easy Fingerstyle Pattern).
Section 4: Combine chords and melody (DAY 3, DAY 4, and DAY 5).
Section 5: Another simple melody with alternate fingering (DAY 1 Alternate Fingering).
